Scenario: It seems to be a general consensus that the number one crime that being abused on the computer is identity theft. Billions of dollars are being stolen out of individual’s personal accounts each year. The crime that is a very close second to identity theft is child pornography. Over the last twenty years, the number of cases that are being investigated have skyrocketed!
The CEO of a multimillion dollar Fortune 500 company appeared to have everything that anyone would need to have a perfect life. He had a beautiful home with an indoor swimming pool, he had classy cars that he could drive a different one each day of the month if he desired, and his financial statements could be compared to Bill Gate’s financial statements without shame. He had recently gotten a divorce and it appeared that he was living the ideal bachelor’s life.
Since his personal life was always being looked at when he went out in public, he chose to spend most of his time in the privacy of his own home. He would spend a lot of his leisure time on the internet because it was very accessible and it allowed him to mentally go wherever he wanted to and do whatever he wanted to without being bothered by anyone.
On a routine sting operation that the Vice Unit of the local police department conducts periodically, one of the investigators was going over the list of names that had come up on pedophiles that would visit child pornography sites and he was astonished that the name of the business man showed up. He immediately got a search warrant and he and his partner paid a visit to the business man. When they questioned the business man about visiting the sites, he denied going to any of the sites on his computer. The investigators asked the business man if it would be O.K. if they took his computer and looked at some of the sites that he had visited. The business man agreed to let the investigators have his computer analyzed because in his mind he felt that each time that he visited the child pornography sites, he would delete any evidence to show that he ever visited the sites.
