– Fiber Analysis
Scenario: A 20 year old college coed was found in her rented apartment completely nude at approximately 8:30 on a Sunday night by her boyfriend. She lived by herself but she had a boyfriend that she frequently had very heated arguments with about her job as a dancer at an entertainment club. The boyfriend said he had not seen here all day and when he hadn’t heard from her, he came over to check on her. Some of the boyfriend’s answers to the investigator’s questions were inconsistent so he became the number one person of interest in this case.
At the crime scene the Crime Scene Investigators put bags on the victim’s clutched fists with anticipation that there might be important physical evidence in them that could help in solving the case. At the autopsy the Medical Examiner pried open the right clutched fist of the victim to reveal a torn piece of material that was multicolored in appearance and the material had an orange button attached to it. Since the boyfriend was the only immediate person of interest in this case, this item of physical evidence could prove to be something that could connect the boyfriend to the victim’s death or reveal another person who might be responsible for the crime.
This audio will explain how these fibers can be analyzed by their texture and color to show consistency with where they might have originated. You will learn the difference between natural fibers and synthetic fibers and which one of the fibers are routinely recovered at the crime scene as physical evidence. This audio will also explain the Forensic Laboratory examinations of fibers and how the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) procedure are scientifically used to individualize different fibers. A very unique criminal case involving a law enforcement officer is used to illustrate how fiber evidence was used to prove the guilt or innocence of the officer.
Whether its cotton, wool, or that very expensive silk that you have in your closet, this audio will explain how the fibers originate and the importance of fiber evidence in helping to piece a criminal case together like a puzzle.
