Gun Shot Residue AnalysisGUNSHOT RESIDUE (GSR) ANALYSIS

Scenario: Two individuals who were down on their luck were sitting around drinking and trying to come up with an idea of how to get some quick money to help them survive their financial crisis. One of the individuals came up with the bright idea to rob a neighborhood liquor store right at closing time to avoid any possible witnesses being in the liquor store during the robbery. At approximately 10:45pm, about 15 minutes before the liquor store was scheduled to close, the two men started to put their plan of robbery into action. They both discussed where each one of them would position themselves while trying to avoid the store cameras and how they would force the owner to the back of the store to open the safe since there were no cameras in the back. They both agreed that they would not hurt the owner.

At 11:00pm as the owner begins to lock the front door, the two men rush into the store pushing the owner down to get control of him by pulling out the guns that they had brought to commit the crime. As they forced the owner into the back to open the safe, the owner became very irritated and started to refuse to cooperate with the armed gunmen. When the owner began to get more aggressive, one of the men started yelling at him and fired his gun and struck the owner in the head killing him. The two men then panicked and ran out of the back of the liquor store.

About an hour later, the two men were arrested on the suspicion of murder and attempted robbery of the liquor store. When the men were questioned, they both agreed that they had been involved with the robbery, but they both were pointing the finger at the other one as to who was the person that shot the owner of the liquor store. Are there any forensic analyses that can be done to determine which one of the men is telling the truth? Can there be gunshot particles deposited on the hands and clothing of an individual during the explosion when a weapon is fired?

This audio will explain what type of gunshot particles are left behind when a weapon is fired and what the chemical makeup is of these particles. Through the use of the vivid pictures on the power point presentation that accompanies the audio, you will be able to see what happens when a weapon is fired and how the gunshot residue is deposited on the hands of an individual firing the weapon. You will also receive valuable information on the Gunshot Residue Kit and how each sample should be taken for analysis. This audio will also give you the limitations of gunshot residue results and how distance determination can be done to suggest how far a person was from another person when the weapon was fired.
